The island-province of Marinduque lies at the very heart of the Philippine archipelago, and such trategic location allows for a dynamic interaction between and among various environmental and social forces that have made and continue to shape the province. It is host to thousand of traipsing and island-hopping visitors and more importantly home to a people proud of a rich culture, a colorful past, and a remarkable tradition. All these features blend into a way of life that is uniquely Marinduqueno. One of the most colorful festivals celebrated in the island of Marinduque is the Moriones Festival. Morion means "mask" or "visor," a part of the medieval Roman armor which covers the face. Moriones, on the other hand, refers to the masked and costumed penitents who march around the town for seven days searching for Longinus.
