The State of South Dakota welcomed home the last soldier from Battery C, 1st Battalion, 147th Field Artillery to return from Iraq. Wounded on Dec. 4, 2005, Sgt. Briest has had a long recovery, but came home to Yankton, SD, to a new handicapped-accessible home donated and built by citizens of SD. At his welcome home ceremony, he was presented several awards, including the Purple Heart, and the Bronze Star. Approximately 60 Patriot Guard and American Legion Rider motorcycles from several states, had the honor of escorting Sgt. Briest from the airport to his award's ceremony, and were then guests of the Yankton VFW for a lunch before returning home.
